Usher ask’s…”What’s A Guy Gotta Do”

Usher

Usher

Usher is hard at work on his next album, which is scheduled to drop later this year and is supposedly entitled ‘Monster’. After the so-so reception that his last collection ‘Here I Stand’ received, Usher needs a hit and he may just have stumbled upon one thanks to the Neptunes who produced the cut “What’s A Guy Gotta Do”. The song takes a page out of brown-skinned Michael Jackson’s playbook and you can hear Chad and Pharrell’s signature sound throughout. This joint is refreshing like a popsicle on a hot summer day. So what’s Usher gotta do to stay relevant in the game? Keep making songs like this one.

Vanessa Williams Returns!!

Vanessa Williams is gearing up for the release of ‘The Real Thing’, her 13th album and Concord Records debut, on June 2nd with not one but three new videos from the project. She somehow found time while portraying the decadently evil Wilhelmina Slater on ABC’s Ugly Betty to record ‘The Real Thing’ with help from a who’s who of songwriters and producers including Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Stevie Wonder, Rex Rideout and Babel Gilberto, who penned “Close To You”, for which the video can be viewed below. “Close To You” finds Vanessa embracing the bossa nova rhythms of Brazil and even singing in Portuguese. Videos for the tracks “Just Friends” and “Breathless” can also be found below. All of these songs and videos are sophisticated and sexy, just like the woman singing them. And Vanessa looks so good in all of these clips it’s mesmerising. Enjoy and be sure to pick up the new album when it hits stores next week.

Joe works his ‘Magic’ and gives us his ‘Worst Case Scenario’

Joe Thomas

Joe Thomas

So Joe, now known by his full name (Joe Thomas) released his seventh studio album a while back now, and I’ve got to say, just saying I was dissapointed with it is a bit of an understatement!!

If I could just emphasise just how highly I regard this man, because he has got to be one of the most talented artists on the circuit, and has been so for the last decade or so! So when I heard that he was going to be releasing a new album “New Man”, I was jumping with excitement! But to me, the album was an utter flop! It didn’t get anywhere near the absolute sensuality of “All That I Am” and the pure perfection of “My Name is…Joe”!!

However, although the album was pretty dull, Joe did tease us with a preview of his forthcoming album…“Signature”. This album was intially supposed to drop Valentine’s Day this year, but almost 4 months on and still nothingbut fear not Joe fans, because the album, which is all love ballads, is due to be released aparrently on 2nd June 14th June according to his Official Website!!

I hear ‘love ballads’ and I can’t help but think of Joe’s second album ‘All That I Am’. Personally, I regard that album as being in my top 10 to own, and so for me to start drawing comparisons to it can only mean that this album is going to blow my mind!! He teased us all with the snippets on the poor excuse for an album ‘New Man’, and had me wanting more! So boy was I excited when I heard the full version of ‘Magic’, coz let me tell you, it is hot!! We also had a leak of another track off this same album called ‘Worst Case Scenario’. On this track, Joe sweetly laments about his ex lover being in bed with another man. ‘Worst Case Scenario’ is perfect for the grown and sexy but I’m not so sure how successful it would be on the charts. Reminescent of the old Joe. If the rest of the album is going to follow suit (and I’m sure that it will), it is going to knock every other artist out of the park!!

My man Joe is back to his very best, and I know that I will be snapping up this album as soon as it’s released…I suggest you do the same. In the meantime, please allow Joe to serenade you to the sounds of ‘Magic’!!

Melanie Fiona say’s “Give It To Me Right”

So I’m going to be the first to admit that I was a bit slow on the uptake with this chick right here. How she slipped through the radar I do not know, but what I do know is…that this girl can sing!! Canadian singer/songwriter Melanie Fiona showcases her first single “Give It To Me Right” now, in this music video.

‘Give It To Me Right,’ is a highly addictive track about needing a man who knows how to properly handle his business in the bedroom. It’s sexy without being too sexual and gets a point across without being crass or vulgar, which is what I really like about it. (Oh, and if you’re wondering what song is being sampled here, it’s “Time of the Season” by ’60s psychedelic pop group The Zombies.) She sounds like a blend of Janelle Monae, Jazmine Sullivan, Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse all rolled into one!!  Not to mention a really hot beat to go with this talented voice.

Be sure to check out her forth coming album, entitled ‘The Bridge’, which is due for release some time this summer. In the meantime, check out the official video for ‘Give It To Me Right’.

“Trust” in Keyshia Cole & Monica to deliver

Monica is back y’all, and this time in collaboration with Keyshia Cole. I’m not a huge fan of the song just yet (need’s time to grow on me), but the girls look absolutely beautiful in the video.

I can’t wait for Mo to drop that album!! She’s what the game’s been missing. Most of her peers are crossing over which is a good thing for her. The lane is wide open right now…

Flashback: Sade

Sade - Best Of...

Sade - Best Of...

If I was to say the name Sade to most youngsters today who claim to know about Urban music, then I can guarantee that I would most probably be confronted by a blank face. The reason…because it’s been a very long time since music of this high quality has been made.

With her exotic beauty and steamy voice, Nigerian songstress Sade Adu couldn’t help but be a star. Taking the more sensuous elements of island beats, smooth jazz, and R&B, Sade scored major hits with the continental feel of “Smooth Operator” and the sultry stylisation of “Your Love Is King”. Her voice was often criticised for being thin, yet she made it work to her advantage with songs like the haunting “Jezebel”, on which her delivery added the vulnerability necessary to the song.

There is an amazingly smooth flow to this marvelously put together effort. You never want to skip around because the song before the one you want to hear is great too! It’s like that. This is one of the best, ‘Best Of’ CD’s out there. Every Sade fan has this one and you’ll want to pick it up also.Whether you’re a die hard Sade fan or just a casual listener, once you listen to this you will find yourself hypnotised. That’s what Sade does to you. The exotic blend of the band’s rhythms and the smooth stylings of Sade Adu come together to form a unique musical experience like no other. There is no one like her, period.

In my opinion, one of the best tracks off this album and one that is very hard to overlook is ‘No Ordinary Love’. A moody, bluesy track drowned in sorrow, it’s lyrics are evocatively accurate about falling in love.  Another of my favourite tracks, which dissapointingly was not included on the album is ‘By Your Side’.

Sade is not only a blindingly beautiful woman, but also an awesomely talented one. If you don’t know…then get to know! Get your ass down to the record store and purchase…a must in your collection!

Max is back…oh yes he is!!!

I cannot even begin to tell you how long I have been waiting for this maestro to release his latest batch of albums!! And I can say with a huge smile on my face that the wait is finally over!! I was introduced to Maxwell quite late on, definetely after the release of his three previous albums (not including the MTV Unplugged). But once I was…I was hooked. The first time I heard that sultry voice on ‘Urban Hang Suite’, I was a fan for life!!

It’s been eight years since Maxwell released ‘Now’. For most artists, that’s a career suicide to be in a hiatus for almost a decade. For Maxwell, all the time away ever did was increase the buzz for the enigma’s comeback album. An appearance at the BET Awards last year only heightened the buzz for a Maxwell return and finally it will happen. Now, after an extended break, Maxwell is set to return with not one, but a trilogy of albums. The title of the release is Black Summer’s Night and will drop in three different installments with Black being the first to be released this summer. There is no scheduled release date for the other two installments but I read on BET.com  that the songs are recorded and completed for both Summer and Night.

BET.com got a chance to hear the first album of the Black Summer’s Night and for those concerned that Maxwell may have changed his sound, fear not, Maxwell has not lost a step. Before we go any further, it is imperative to note that there are no Lil Wayne guest appearances, no Kanye West production and no Autotune. It is safe to say that the lush arrangements and vocals that have made many a lady heart melt is still intact.

Many of the songs feature several movements and some stretches of noteworthy instrumentation. Sure, Maxwell is known for his impressive vocal talents, but the production on this outing masterfully brings the album full circle.

Scheduled for release on 7th July 2009 (put in your diaries people!!), Black features songs stuffed full of emotion and energy. Brooding love jams, funky basslines and Maxwell begging, pleading, loving and crooning his way through the nine song release.

Maxwell has also decided to keep it short and sweet with nine offerings that will surely leave the listener yearning for more.

Take it “Slooow” with J*Davey

J*Davey return with their latest video for ‘Slooow’, and to be quite honest with y’all…its not all that great. Sure Miss Jack Davey looks fierce as always and Brook De’ Leau looks as aloof as always, but a red and blue changing background with Miss Davey spinning on a platform is not what I had in mind from this genre-breaking duo.

Although with that being said, a very mellow yet funky track from the duo. So having said the video was pretty boring, the track itself kind of makes up for it…check it out…
